Fig. 1 · Stool 14-08, measured

Table height, and light enough to carry

These are the bench figures for stool 14-08, the next one we will ship.

  • 450mm

    Seat height

Dining-chair height, so it tucks under a table.

  • 2.4kg

    Weight

About as heavy as a full kettle.

  • 12°

    Leg splay

Each leg leans out, so the stance is wider than the seat.

  • 8%

    Moisture at turning

Dry enough that the joints stay tight in a warm room.

Front view of the stool, 360 mm across the feet and 450 mm high.
Angle of the view

Four views, one stool

Drawn to size from four sides

We photograph every piece square to the camera and draw its real measurements beside each view. Choose an angle under the picture to turn it.

  1. Front

360 mm across the feet, 450 mm high

One board of ash makes the seat. It is 30 mm thick and rounded above and below, so there is no hard edge under your legs.

  2. Side

360 mm front to back, 450 mm high

A quarter turn and the depth reads the same, because the three feet sit on one circle. Each leg leans out 12°, so it stays put when you shift your weight.

  3. Top

360 mm across the feet, both ways

From above, the seat is a true circle of Ø 320 mm with the grain running straight across. The feet land just outside its rim, which is why it will not tip when you lean.

  4. Three-quarter

360 mm across the feet, 450 mm overall

This view is not square to the camera, so its lines give overall figures. The legs sit in round blind mortises, and nothing shows through the seat.

Close up · Fig. 3 to 5

It cannot rock on any floor.

Three points always share a plane, so all three feet touch down whatever the floor does. We turn each leg from its own billet of ash and glue it into a round blind mortise. Nothing is screwed, so nothing works loose, and the feet are bare end grain, oiled like the rest.

Pull it up to any table

At 450 mm it sits at a desk or a kitchen table, and at 2.4 kg it moves with one hand. The one in our workshop lives beside the lathe and gets stood on for the top shelf most days.

Reviewers brought their own calipers

Four trade magazines lived with one of our stools for a month. Each tested something different and wrote the number down.
